Happy Valentine's Day!

Yes! After a steady diet of caffeine, sugar, and pure will for three weeks, we have made it. It's over! Well, at least on our end....We know some of you are still in the midst of one of your busiest days of the year, so push on! Soon, you will be able to put your feet up and take time to...um....smell the flowers.

Beauty Review: LUSH Valentine's Day Favourites 2017

LUSH Valentines Day blog
The countdown to February 14th has officially begun and so it seemed only right to share yet another seasonal mini LUSH haul. Whether you're single or celebrating with your loved one this year, self-pampering is important so here's some of my favourites for you all to enjoy from this year's Valentine's collection...

LUSH Valentines shower gel
Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair Shower Gel, £5.95 per 100g - I'm a sucker for a classic movie reference but what really drew me to this product was it's combination of ingredients. Made from freshly squeezed guava and fig juices, this shower gel combines fragrant and deep cleaning designed to leave you with a natural glow. Also made from lavender, jasmine flower, rose petal blends, jasmine AND ylang ylang, it's no surprise that this shower gel smells incredible. The jasmine and ylang ylang are used to make for a sensual and seductive cleanse whilst the sandalwood provides an uplifting kick. It's probably one of my most favourite of their shower gels to date and if you're a fan of floral scents - you're sure to love it. This also comes in wash sheet form which perfectly leads me on to my next treat...

LUSH Valentines wash card
Kiss Me Quick Wash Card, £2.00 each - I had never seen anything like a wash card before so naturally, you can see my need to investigate. To my knowledge, this is the first shower sheet or wash card I've seen in LUSH since 2015 and are pretty much as you'd expect - shower gel in card form about the size of a business card. Having ordered online, I was a little surprised at just how small this was but they make for excellent travel cosmetics and can also be used as a shampoo for on the go.

Made from fresh apple pulp, the Kiss Me Quick wash card, is made using enzymic oil from lemons and limes for a zesty deep cleanse. To use it, simply lather it up and use it like a sponge all over your body. Rinse off and enjoy soft, clean skin! Much like Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair Shower Gel, it also has ylang ylang for a sweet fragrance. I'd definitely recommend trying these out as they smell amazing - even if they are a bit of a novelty.
LUSH heart bath bomb
Cupid Bath Bomb, £2,95 each - I'm obsessed with anything pink and heart shaped so naturally, this had to go straight in the basket. This particular bomb just makes sense to me and seems to embody the LUSH Valentine's Day collection perfectly. Much like the other items in this mini haul, the Cupid Bath Bomb is designed to be uplifting. Made from bergamot, rose and violet leaf absolute, its essentially a bomb of floral sweetness. Besides smelling amazing and looking adorable, it will make your bath look awesome, unleashing pinky hews - it just screams all things Valentine's Day. One down side is that it is rather small - but perfectly formed.

Two Hearts Beating as One Bath Melt, £3.95 each - Last but certainly not least is this fabulous bath melt which also doubles up an oil. Also made from ylang ylang, jasmine and rose oils, Two Hearts Beating as One is design to be sensual and uplifting. There's clearly a theme here. Another great feature of this delightfully pretty melt is that it has softening qualities. Made from organic cocoa butter, almond and argan oils, and apricot kernel oil, it acts as an intense body conditioner - leaving your skin silky soft and fresh. Again, this one looks amazing in the bath and would recommend it if you're skin is feeling tired and grey from the cold weather.

LUSH Valentines Day
Well, that's it for this year's Valentine's Day LUSH favourites - have you tried any of the products above? What were your favourites from the 2017 collection? As always, I love reading your comment so please do leave me lots of lovely ones down below. Whether you're staying in, going out, spending it friends or a partner - I hope you all have a good one!

Until next time LUSH lovers,

Sun Pac Valentine's Day Bouquets

Every year, during the fervor of Flower Holiday Season, I like to get together with Rodi Groot, head of Sun Pacific Bouquet (aka Sun Pac).  While much of Sun Valley's time is allocated to growing, picking, and shipping the high-quality blooms we're known for, Sun Pac is responsible for using those farm-fresh flowers to design and build hand-crafted and custom bouquets.

If you're looking for bouquets, contact us, as we are still taking orders for Valentine’s Day!

Bright Valentine's Day Flowers
Sun Pac's office is located in Oxnard at our Southern California farm; I gave Rodi a call to see what he and his team have going on for Valentine's Day 2017:

How have you and your team been preparing for the holiday?

Preparing for Valentine's DAy We have been busy! For the last six months we've implemented new software, technology, and machinery to give us even better control of our costs.  And since the new year, we've deep-cleaned our entire bouquet assembly area, sanded and resealed all production tables, confirmed (and confirmed again) that flower farm production will match perfectly with the number of planned bouquets, and we have been hiring and training extra team members to keep up with production.  We will end up adding 400% more team members to the Bouquet Department alone in order fulfill demand and ensure that all our products will delight and amaze.

Tulip Valentine's Day Bouquet

Your design team is at the forefront of floral trends and fashions (read about their creative process here); any noticeable trends in the bouquet world?

Sunflowers Lilies Matricaria Bouquet
Chamomile, snaps, sunflowers
The shift towards the wildflower and garden-style look continues to grow, which is fantastic.  We have great access to flowers and greens that fit this pretty aesthetic.  Our Fields Collection is an example of this.  Simple market bunches are another item that looks to do very well.

We also have a brand new sleeve made out of white paper, which mimics the white paper used at the Dutch flower markets.  This adds to each hand-crafted bouquet a romantic, European-flower-market feel.  This aesthetic looks like it is going to be a huge trend, and its great to be out in front of it.  So, keep your eye out and remember you heard it here first!

What are some of your most popular items this year?

Chamomile, snapdragons, brassica, grevillea, sweet and green huck, bear grass, and sunflowers are high in demand, especially when accentuated with focal flowers like Royal Lilies, and spiced up with spray roses.

Any products or bouquets you are particularly excited about?

A great value for this holiday is our red tulip and blue iris bouquet, which can be upgraded to add our sweet-smelling, pink-purple waxflower and rounded out with salal.

Another bouquet to highlight is the Blue Royale.  This bouquet is a blend of premium-grade flowers (in Valentine's Day colors) wrapped in our custom-made, blue and white composed granite sleeve.  It looks full and fantastic, and smells great.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Rodi!

How Groundhog Day is Just like Valentine's Day for the Floral Professional

 Happy Groundhog Day 2016!

If you are familiar with this February 2nd "holiday," then you know it's all about a little furry guy coming out of his (or her) burrow, maybe seeing his shadow, maybe not.  If he sees his shadow, it's another 6 weeks of brutal winter, if not, spring will come early.

If you are familiar with movies, then you know Groundhog Day is a 1993 cult classic starring Bill Murray as the egocentric soul who spends 10+ years (according to some movie mathematicians) in a Groundhog Day time loop. Every morning he awakens and reawakens to February 2nd, Sonny and Cher singing "I've Got You Babe" on the radio.

Now that it's Valentine's Day go-time, any of you floral professionals feeling that way about our blessed February 14th? In the world of flowers, it seems that Groundhog Day (both the actual day and the movie) are synonymous with the Valentine's Day holiday madness. It does seem like just yesterday that we were planning, prepping, and preparing for Valentine's Day 2015, yet here we are again! (And for those of you who are experiencing your first Valentine's Day in the floral industry....just you wait....)

No thank you!

In the movie Bill Murray's character, Phil Connors, handles the time loop poorly. Very poorly.  After his initial reaction of bewilderment, he attempts to handle the senseless repetition with hedonism and manipulation, but finds no reprieve in his indulgences.  He then tries to end the repeat-day by killing himself in a variety of creative ways (including taking a toaster into the bathtub), yet every morning he still wakes up to the sounds of "I've Got You Babe" on the clock radio and the calendar pointing to February 2nd.

Phil's final attempt to deal with the time loop is self-actualization.  He learns new skills--how to play the piano, sculpt ice, speak French.  He learns all about the people around him and what makes them tick.  Eventually, he uses this knowledge of the townspeople and the day's events to help as many people as possible...the former misanthrope even falls in love.

So, in light of Groundhog Day, how are you handling the Valentine's Day time loop? Are you losing your head? Are you trying to control the uncontrollable? Are you, like me, drinking too much coffee?  Or, like our dear antagonist-turned-protagonist Phil Connors, are you learning from past mistakes, enhancing your own human understanding to rise above the absurd and the mundane?

Coffee helps.

Now, no matter how crazy this holiday season gets, and no matter how tempting it may be to make some sparks in the bathtub or eat ALL the donuts, we urge you to KEEP GOING! YOU CAN DO IT! Soon, the madness will be over.......just in time to start again.

Rita: This day was perfect. You couldn't have planned a day like this.
Phil: Well, you can. It just takes an awful lot of work.

The Spectrum of Valentine Flowers

It may seem too early to start talking about Valentine's Day, but here on the flower farm, we have been acting on it since last fall. We planted our Valentine lily and iris crops in October, and two short months later, we brought our tulips out of the coolers and into the greenhouse, ready to complete their growing cycle.  Looking into the future, what kinds of flowers and flower hues will be in demand this Valentine's Day? Let's find out...

VAlentine's Flowers pink hyacinth and red tulips
Pink Hyacinth + Red Tulips = The Perfect Valentine's Day Combination

The Color of Love: Flowers

The colors of Valentine's Day haven't really changed since its inception--Red, pink and white reign supreme, representing a combination of passion, wealth of love, and purity of heart.  However, we mustn't forget the dark horse of Valentine's Day--Purple.  From dark purple to light lavender, this lovely spectrum symbolizes enchantment, originality, and love at first sight.  Very appropriate and in-demand. We, of course, have the gamut of colors in a range of floral varieties--the reddest of reds and the pinkest of pinks and everything in between.

The Reds

When I think about red flowers, I think of the tulip.  The red tulip is a chic and romantic Valentine's Day flower--lore tells us the tulip's dramatic black eye represents a lover's heart deepened by passion, a perfect symbol for this love-centered holiday.  How red you want to go is up to you; this primary color is represented by the bright orange-red vermilion, to the darker bluish-red crimson, all the way to the darkest burgundy (and we have soil-grown tulips in each and every hue).  Of course, lighten the shade of red and we get "baby red," better known as that other popular Valentine color, PINK.

The Pinks and Whites

Now, when I think about exceptional pink flowers, I think of the lily. My first thought goes to the iconic Stargazer, as its time-honored speckled pink face and signature scent is a perfect Valentine choice.  But then I think of ALL our Oriental lilies--all are veritable floral powerhouses which come in all of Cupid's colors and whose star-shaped blossoms are befitting for any romantic celebration.

A Pink and White Lily Collection
Oriental lilies' range of pink shades begins on the dark side with intense maroon (ie: Sumatra, above photo, center bloom).  Lighten it up to a still-saturated pink hue like Dynamite.  A little lighter, and a variegated pink shines through, such as with the candy-pink Sorbonne.  The hues get lighter and lighter--I especially love the pink edging and white ruffled petals of Hotline.

We cannot talk about pink Valentine lilies without mentioning Roselilies.  Their growing popularity and lush double-petaled heads guarantee that they will sell out this Valentine's season, so get these decadent, premium, and romantic blooms while you can!

And of course, at the end of the red, pink, and white spectrum we get the beautiful pure white of White Cup lilies, Clearwater tulips and more. Their clean coloration signifies pride and devotion and never fails to put on a celebratory show.

The Purples

Ah, purple, how do we love thee? I consider purple to be the middle child of Valentine's day, always included but never talked about. By definition, purple is a range of hues between red and blue, and is often associated with royalty, mystery, and magic.  When combined with pink, it is associated with femininity, seduction, and eroticism (if that doesn't scream Valentine's Day, what does?).  If you want to think outside the box, yet remain romantically relevant this Valentine's day, think purple, lavender, and violet.  Mix purple with pink and you have yourself an extra special mix, my friend.

Valentine's Day marks the start of the Floral Industry's 5-month Holiday Season, and soon, we pass our flower baton to all the other flower professionals who are going to keep the V-day train running all the way through to the end. Now that you know what to expect....are you ready?

American-grown tulips and Oriental lilies on trend for Valentine’s Day

For Valentine’s Day 2015, the buzz is already about U.S.-grown flowers. Consumers are excited to learn where their food and flowers come from; they want to know the farmer who grew their veggies, the vintner who made their wine and the flower farmer who grew the romantic blooms that will be the centerpiece of their Valentine’s Day ritual.

Valentine's flower trend
Tulips On Trend
People are looking for domestic Valentine’s Day flowers, and of course they want reds, whites and pinks. The traditional roses and carnations are being joined by tulips and lilies as the trend-centric floral world rides the wave of the farmers market and locally grown aesthetics.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are currently 8,268 farmers markets in the United States, up from 3,706 in 2004. People are demanding access to fresh, seasonal and local foods — and retailers, farmers and all sorts of individuals are responding. The same trend affecting fruits and vegetables is finally coming to flowers.

For centuries the red tulip has represented love. According to the book, The Meaning of Flowers, by Gretchen Scoble and Ann Field, in ancient Persia to give a red tulip was to declare your love. The black center of the red tulip was said to represent the lover’s heart, burned to a coal by love’s passion. This speaks of the true essence of Valentine’s Day, and year-round domestic tulip production means these blooms will be available for the big day.

As Valentine’s Day shoppers look to impress, nothing in the flower world can touch the wow factor of an Oriental lily. The bold pinks and reds of Starfighters and Stargazers balanced with the purity of a White Cup or Gizmo white Oriental is a dramatic way to capture your customers’ attention. Did you know the Stargazer was bred in the small town of Arcata, CA, about 40 years ago?

Stargazers for Valentine's!
The other lily making waves for Valentine’s Day is the Roselily series. These decadent double and triple-petaled lilies are stunning. They have been bred to have a softer fragrance than a traditional Oriental, and they are also pollen-free. These lilies are still relatively new to the market, so as Valentine’s Day approaches, demand for them will be growing. These are a premium item, but Valentine’s Day is a time when consumers focus more on the bloom and less on the price.

Valentine's Day on the Farm
This local flower trend goes by many names, such as slow flowers, field-to-vase and field-to-table flowers, but all these monikers reflect the consumers’ interest in knowing by whom and where their flowers were grown. It’s our job to tell them.

Is Giving Flowers in Your DNA?

I live about 9 miles from our flower farm. On the temperate California coast, winter is cloudy and rainy, and we only get a couple hard freezes a year. Even though I miss the snow, having grown up in Rhode Island, it's nice let the kids out into the front yard on a sunny day in January, with just a light weight coat.

Perfect Valentine's Day Flowers
#AmericanGrown tulips are the perfect Valentine's Day present!
I have a 15 month year old son, who is really the reason behind this post. Last week, he performed an act that really got me thinking.

My yard has few spots of clover pushing through the green grass. The clover was blooming in patches of little white flowers. I was sitting on the front steps, enjoying the sun and the peace of the neighborhood on a late afternoon.

My 15 month old boy, walked (barely!) over to the clover, sat down, looked at the flowers intently, then reached, picked one.

He held it in his hand as he laboriously stood back up, gained his balance, then walked straight to me, then held out the flower as an offering, along with a smile highlighting his 7 teeth.

As I accepted the flower, the purity of this action struck me. Flower giving is not learned, it is not dictated by marketers and ad campaigns, flower giving is as intuitive as walking or eating. Flower giving is a natural act that human beings are hard wired to perform.

As Valentine's Day approaches, don't fight it, giving flowers is in your DNA.
