Ideal Conditions Required for Growing Turmeric

Climate
Tropical herb grows both in tropics and subtropics. Humid climate preferred.

Optimum  Spacing
45 – 60 cm  between rows and 25 cm between plants

Sandy Loamy soil, Clayey loamy soil , Red soil, Light black  soil or ashy loam soil

Temperature
20 – 30 degree Celsius.

Preferred mixed crops
Maize, Millet, Onion, Brinjal and Castor

Rainfall
1500mm per annum or more

Manures and Fertilization
Heavy manuring required, avoid using chemicals or other harmful pesticides. Applications of rotten cow dung or compost from own farm may be given as basal dose.  In addition, application of neem cake is also desirable

Maturity period
Early varieties mature in 7-8 months and medium varieties in 8-9 months

Diseases
No Major disease noticed in turmeric. Leaf spot and leaf blotch can be controlled by restricted use of Bordeaux mixture 1%.   Application of Trichoderma at the time of planting can check the incidence of rhizome rot.

Seed preservation
Rhizomes for seed are generally heaped under the shad e of trees or in well-ventilated sheds and covered with turmeric leaves. Seed rhizomes can be store in pits with sawdust.

Yield
Pure crop varies from 8000 to 1000 kg per acre.  Under exceptionally favorable conditions viz. abundant manuring and copious irrigation it may be as high as 12000 kg / acre

About 15 – 20 irrigation in clayey soils and 40 irrigation in sandy loams

Common varieties
Duggirala, Sugandham etc.,
