Come sit with me in the garden....

Come sit with me in the garden....



Come sit with me in the garden and we'll talk about lawns of clover, fresh-picked peas and the scent of lily of the valley.

We'll remember when it was once warm as we watch the birds peck at frozen seed and suet at the nearby bird feeders.  There are cardinals and starlings and morning doves taking their turns.

I vanquish thee, O' Winter



I vanquish thee, O' Winter.

I have Lily of the Valley in bloom indoors.  One whiff of the tiny bell-shaped flowers and I see my garden in the spring-time, green and lush.  I don't see the snow covered lawn. I don't see the snow coming down fast and furious. I don't think about the long, dark wintry days ahead.  I don't think shoveling snow off the driveway. Spring is in the air inside.

First Snow Starts the Thinking Season of Gardening



First snow. Thursday night into Friday morning. About four inches here, give or take. Plus it is quite chilly. 

No one is going to sit in those chairs for a while now. They are made of engineered wood and will withstand the wintry weather, so I leave them out in the garden.

They are too heavy for me to move around every fall and spring, anyway.

My garden has never been more ready for winter

Elizabeth Lawrence, the famous southern garden writer, had one for her garden.

So did the writer, Eudora Welty, who spent a lot of time in her garden, fussing over her camellias. She wrote in her gardening letters during World War II it was hard to find a reliable one.

I never thought I'd have one, but I do.
