Lifestyle Event: The Art of the Brick - DC Super Heroes, Southbank
art in London dc comics exhibitions London LEGO press event LEGO superheros superhero The Art of the Brick - DC Super Heroes warner bros bloggersThis week, I was invited to attend the press launch to preview the world's largest LEGO® exhibition inspired by DC Characters. Now open to the public, I thought I'd share a look inside The Art of the Brick: DC Super Heroes and my thoughts from the event...
Created by former lawyer turned professional LEGO® artist, Nathan Sawaya, The Art of the Brick DC Super Heroes is London's latest art pop-up; located just a short walk from London Waterloo Station. Originally opened in 2014 and having toured the world, this is the exhibit's first time in the UK and features over 120 pieces built from over 2 million bricks - all inspired by DC Comic's most famous and iconic super heroes and villains. Here's a closer look at some of the sculptures...
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first arrived at the comic print tent-like structure, but once inside I was surprised at just how much there is to see. The pop-up itself is divided in to different spaces (Villians, DC Dark, Heroes etc.), and also features some rare, original first copies of DC comics alongside a variety of unique pieces. Intended for both children and adults, I certainly think there is something for everyone - including some abstract creations and a scale model of the Batmobile.
One thing I liked in particular (besides the fact it's LEGO®) was that the installation included a wide range of characters spanning decades of the DC franchise - including some unlikely and lesser recognised villians. Of course, whilst Batman, Superman and the Joker were undoubtedly the most featured, it was nice to see something for the more hardcore fans as well as some old favourites.
My only criticism, if at all, was that the exhibit could have been a little bit more interactive. It does feature an introductory video at the start of the exhibit but essentially it involves walking through each room and admiring the sculptures. However, each piece is without a doubt very cool so at no point should you find yourself bored.
Naturally, the exhibt ends at the gift shop - stocked up with anything you can think of with a DC lego on it. There was a lot of emphasis on LEGO pieces and DC although not much to buy which was exclusive to the exhibition itself. However, there are some pretty cool bits if you're going with the intention of adding some bits to your nerd stash.
I'm not sure if he's there all the time or just for this event but there's a guy dressed as Batman just walking round which was also pretty fun and obviously I managed to snap a photo of him (above).
Overall, I genuinely really enjoyed The Art of the Brick - DC Super Heroes. If you're a comic book fan, love superhero movies or just interested in LEGO, I think it's well worth the visit. I imagine that now that it's open to the public that it may be a bit busier but I believe you could easily kill a good hour or more just looking at everything. The exhibition is running until early September 2017 and tickets are available from here - priced at £10.00 each.
Well, that's it for another event. What do you make of The Art of the Brick? Would you like to go? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave me lots of lovely comments below.
Until next time,
