Interesting area today

I was surrounded by industrial and residential land where I was working today. As I headed to one fields, I noticed the sign about remote control locomotives.  As I was working, a short train went by.  There was a caboose in the forward position, and it was occupied.  The locomotive was in the middle and appeared to be empty.  The industry sort of isolated the area and served as a sanctuary for the deer who were not very wary of me at all. They are protected from hunting.

Memorial Day Decorations.

We were working near Coffeen Lake today and decided to check on a geocache I have hidden near Ticky Point Cemetery.  Seven Civil War Veterans are buried there and the graves of all seven still had decorations from Memorial Day.  I thought it was wonderful to remember all of them. The cemetery is very small and hidden in the woods.

River Traffic

Yesterday we were stopped by the drawbridge at Florence as the Erna E Honeycut and then the Mari Lampton passed by.  The Honeycutt was pushing a variety of cargos. barges were loaded with coal, scrap iron, scrap aluminum, rock, iron ore and at least one tanker.  The Mari Lampton was pushing 3 tanker barges.  Not sure of cargo.  The biggest tonage on the river is agriculture products.

Phlox in Bloom

I always think of my mother when i see phlox in bloom.  When I was still in elementary school we were driving home from Sunday School when my mom saw some phlox in bllom.  She decided to stop and dig some up an plant it in the yard. Dad told her i would not grow in the yard because it was a woodland plant.  It is still growing to this day.  It even survived the flood of 1993.

A Remnant From the Past

The corn crib below is located near Girard.  It is really hard to see in the summer because of the large tree growing out of it.  Yes, that tree is in middle and growing out of the crib in several places.

Fall Colors

Weather has been so warm this fall that trees were slow to change colors.  Now with our recent freeze, they seem to be just dropping leaves.  I did find some bright fall colors in a few places even though it was a dull day on Saturday.

Passing of the seasons.

A late summer view of Route 66 Weigh Station Prairie North of Litchfield.  The ditch area through the middle is healing better than expected.  Laborious and costly teasel control seems to have been effective.  This would look better if we had been able to burn this spring.

Memorial Day

This weekend we pause to consider the soldiers who fought and died for our country.  The veterans memorial in Hillsboro will be the site of a ceremony tomorrow, weather permitting.  General Logan first directed the decoration of graves in 1868.  The agriculture connection?  Many who fought and died for our country were farmers or farm boys who went off to war and then came home to grow our food.  Think of these guys as you enjoy your beer and BBQ.

Farmersville to Wagonner Green Diamond Trail

Farmersville to Wagonner Green Diamond Trail

By Angela Karban:

On Sunday, May 17, Don and I scouted our first trail of the 2015 Trailblazers Challenge.  We rode our bikes on the tree-lined asphalt path from Farmersville to Waggoner, the Green Diamond Trail.  We saw and listened to the melodic songs of many birds, including cardinals, robins, wrens, blackbirds, Baltimore orioles, and the beautiful indigo bunting. There was an abundance of milkweed plants along the edges which will feed the Monarch butterflies later in the summer.  And the sweet smell of the honeysuckle flowers was still in the air.  It was a delightful ride on a windy Sunday.
Come join us for the group walk at 9:00 a.m. on May 30th to start the season.  A light breakfast of orange juice and granola bars will be served  at the Farmersville entrance.  Bring your binoculars to view the birds more closely.

Passing of the Seasons

Route 66 Weigh Station Prairie is starting to turn a bit green.  IDOT did some drainage work through the winter and messed it up a bit.  There is not much action in the field in our area.

Eagle Cliff

On Saturday as I was coming home Miles Cemetery caught my eye more than usual because someone had burned the small hill prairie in front of the mausoleum. The burning helps maintain the grassland in an area that would likely revert to trees if not burned.  The evergreens are cedars.  If you click and enlarge, you will see two people standing in front of the mausoleum. Click the Link for Miles Cemetery Facebook page. This area was called Eagle Cliff by the early settlers because of the eagles nesting there. It happened that I was able to photograph an Eagle on her nest less than a quarter mile from the cliff. The nest has been there for several years.  It is less than a hundred yards from a very busy road.

Metamora Courthouse

I made a special effort on Wednesday to photograph the Metamora Courthouse.  It is now a museum.  The Metamora Courthouse is one of the few remaining where Abraham Lincoln Practiced law.
