Potassium ( K ) and its Importance in Plants

Potassium is an essential nutrient for plants next to Nitrogen.  Plants absorb potassium in its iconic form K+.

During photosynthesis potassium regulates CO2uptake by opening and closing of stomata.

Triggers activation of enzymes, which leads to the production of ATP (Adenosine and Triphosphate) that helps plants in many chemical processes

Improves Drought Resistance

Plays a key role in maintaining Osmo-Regulation (Uptake of water through roots and loss through the stomata are affected by potassium)

In starch synthesis, the enzyme responsible for the process is activated by potassium
Potassium affects the shape, colour, size, taste and other measurements attributed to healthy produce.

Deficiency of Potassium leads to Chlorosis, Stunned growth, Defoliation, Poor resistance to pests, weak and unhealthy roots and uneven ripening of fruits.

Adequate moisture is required for potassium uptake, low water soil reduces K uptake by plants.  Prevention and cure can be achieved by adding potassium specific fertilizer “Potash” which consists of K2CO3
