Rainforest Alliance Tulips

Good news, everybody! Our Arcata Farm has just been Rainforest Alliance Certified! While their certification services have been exercised around the world, they have just begun including United States farms in their certification process and we are the very first American Grown flower farm in the US to gain certification.

Rainforest Alliance Certified Flowers

Believe it or not, our Sun Valley home in Humboldt County exists within the largest Temperate Rainforest in California, populated by Sequoia sempervirens, better known as the tallest tree in the world, the coastal Redwood.  Definitions of rainforest aside, the most important takeaway about the Rainforest Alliance Certification is what it means for us, our flowers, and you.

Sun Valley Eco-Friendly Flowers

You've probably seen Rainforest Alliance Certification seal on food, beverages, and other agricultural products all around the world. That little frog says a lot -- it assures you that the product you are enjoying comes from a farm that has met the strict standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), designed with environmental, social, and economic sustainability in mind.

Cultivating Eco-Friendly Flowers

Sun Valley Floral Farms SustainabilityIn order to certify our Arcata farm and all its products--lilies, iris, and of course, our bread and butter, tulips--we are regularly audited for verification of our compliance with SAN's comprehensive sustainable guidelines.  These guidelines are based upon the basic principles of sustainable farming: biodiversity conservation, improved livelihoods and human well-being, natural resource conservation, and effective planning and farm management systems to reduce waste.

Energy Management: We record, report, and make efforts to reduce our energy usage, by using renewable energy (such as our energy-efficient greenhouses and Snap Fans).  Our team members use bicycles to get from place to place, which is friendlier for the land and for our health.

Soil and Water Conservation:  Both water and soil are some of our most precious resources -- we conserve water through the use of drip-tape irrigation, fertigation, and by monitoring waste-water and preventing contamination.  We conserve soil with natural barriers to reduce runoff, and we utilize steam-sterilization techniques to sanitize and reuse our soil, which reduces overall waste.

Working Conditions, Occupational Health, and Community Relations:  Our team members are treated with respect—not only in accordance with the conventions of the International Labor Organization, but also under our Guiding Principles, which guarantee respect and opportunities to learn and grow, along with access to training and healthcare services.    We also have occupational health and safety programs to reduce the risk of accidents and to support the health of our team members who are involved with hazardous activities (such as operating heavy machinery).

Ladybugs- a biological weapon against pests
Integrated Crop Management: Certification requires the shunning of highly toxic pesticides and the use of earth-friendly biological and mechanical methods (good bugs vs. bad bugs) instead.  If approved pesticides are used, they are applied responsibly and safely with the protection of our team members and the environment in mind.

Integrated Waste Management:  We manage our waste through recycling, reducing, and reusing.  As mentioned above, we reuse our soil by steam-sanitizing it; plus, leftover greenery (stems, roots, bulbs, leaves, and flowers) aren't just thrown in the garbage--we add them to our compost pile out back, where they eventually breaks down into a nutrient-rich additive which we can use again.

While this is an abridged explanation of what the Certification requires, it does paint a pretty full picture about Rainforest Alliance's deep-seated commitment to conservation.  What's more, these guidelines are continually being improved and advanced as our world progresses in sustainable agriculture techniques.

We're proud to offer Rainforest Certified Tulips out of our Arcata Farm.  They join our matricaria, snapdragons, amazon dianthus, sunflowers, statice, solidago, and more that come out of our Baja Farm, which is also Rainforest Alliance Certified.  For us, it is about respect for the land, respect for the flowers, and respect for people -- our team members, community, and customers. For an eco-friendly certified tulip, look for Sun Valley flowers and keep your eyes peeled for that little green frog!

Earth Day Iris

This Friday is Earth Day 2016—a day allocated for collective appreciation and celebration of this Blue Planet on which we all reside.

It all began in 1970, when 22 million Americans came together to raise awareness about the importance of clean land, air, and water, which eventually led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.  Now, 193 countries join in celebrating the planet, with the aim to protect and preserve it to the best of our abilities.

Symbols used for Earth Day typically involve images of trees, flowers, or leaves depicting growth and a healthy environment.  Last year began the trend of using Iris as the Earth Day Flower, a fitting symbol of a Blue Flower for a Blue Planet.

Recently, this Blue Flower for a Blue Planet concept was beautifully captured by our friend and renowned floral designer, Wil Gonzalez.  His floral installment for the annual Bouquets to Art exhibition in San Francisco featured our Telstar iris, and his commentary on the piece was just as gorgeous as the floral art itself:
"Cool, wet and inviting, the tranquil, watery blue, the continually changing textures of these slowly maturing blossoms over the pass of the next week allow this flower arrangement to evolve...A flower arrangement reminds us to enjoy this moment in time. It will never look the same again."

Like this ever-evolving floral arrangement, so grows and changes our Blue Planet (and us along with it).  This is why Sun Valley strives to change and evolve with the Earth, rather than fight against it.  We do this by continually improving and innovating our sustainable farming practices as time goes on.

For example, we sustain our blue planet through recycling and reusing our greenhouse drain water, practicing crop rotation, integrated waste and compost management, and steam-sterilization techniques (an environmentally-friendly way to reuse soil).  We have energy-efficient greenhouses, Snap Fans in our hoop houses (see video below), and we, the people, use bicycles to get from place to place, which is friendly for the land and for our bodies.

All of these practices are guaranteed and verified by Bloom Check, a strict certification program for flower farmers in the United States.  It is through these "best practices" that we can achieve a healthy, symbiotic relationship with the planet that gives us (and you!) its gorgeous flowers. We strive to be as refreshing and pure as the most fitting Earth Day symbol, the Telstar Iris.  This Blue Flower for a Blue Planet shows the beauty that clean air, land, and water can achieve.

It's no small thing, Earth Day.  After all, this blue planet is the setting for our entire existence; and truly, the one thing that all of humanity shares, no matter what our beliefs, location, or history.  Let's celebrate it!

Bloom Check Sustainability

Sun Valley just made a change that is good news for you, good news for your flowers, AND good news for the environment--we have officially switched over to Bloom Check.

Bloom check certified sustainable flowers
Okay, so what is Bloom Check? Bloom Check a certification program all about sustainable farming practices in the US.  More specifically, it the gold standard in the sustainable certification of fresh cut flowers and foliage.

For retailers and consumers, it means the flowers you buy are grown under the highest standards for flower production, cultivated with respect for the land and dignity for the people who work it.  You are buying the best--and kindest--flowers that America has to offer.

For us, the flower farmer, it means we've met the most rigorous standards for growing flowers in the US.  We have gone through an extensive audit to ensure that we are using best practices with regards to water use, air and soil quality, wildlife protection, as well as societal impacts on our team members and community.    We have earned the right to wear the Bloom Check badge of honor on our (flower) sleeves, and we wear it proudly.

So, what are these rigorous standards?

To ensure objectivity, the standards, accreditation, and audits for Bloom Check are conducted by a third-party certifier, Protected Harvest.

Protected Harvest is an independent, nonprofit organization which judges sustainability based on nine different production management categories: field scouting, information sources, pest management, field management, weed management, insect management, disease management, soil and water quality, and storage.

Not only that, we must stay below a certain number of toxicity units per acre.  Highly toxic pesticides are prohibited, and earth-friendly biological methods (good bugs vs. bad bugs) are encouraged.  Also, each handler of the crop must undergo a chain-of-custody audit that follows the crop from field to retail.  This extra step ensures that ALL levels of flower production (including storage, packing, and transportation)  is done as sustainably as possible.

How is Bloom Check different from other sustainable certifications?

Origin matters!  Bloom Check is specifically designed for flower farmers in the United States, giving you the assurance that your flowers were not imported from another country on an air freighter or big boat.  Moreover, because Bloom Check is specific to American Grown flower products, the farms must also adhere to regulations put forth by the USDA, EPA, CDFA, State Water Board, Coastal Commission, and more  This gives consumers an authoritative guarantee from Protected Harvest and tens of regulatory government agencies that the Bloom Check flowers you buy are sustainably grown, with no shortcuts.

Sun Valley has always practiced sustainability, but changing our certification to Bloom Check helps us exhibit our practices with pride (and a stout guarantee). Sustainability is innovation, and our efforts to rework energy use, recycle water and soil, and take care of our employees is not only good for the environment, it's good for business.

When you buy or sell our Bloom Check-certified blooms, you can feel good that they are not only gorgeous in their appearance but also good for the earth and the future.

Blue Flower, Blue Planet : Earth Day 2015

Earth Day was first conceived in 1969, in reaction to a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara that ravaged the California coastline.  At the time, there were minimal protections for our blue planet, and accidents of this kind were common.  Community organizers, along with a senator from Wisconsin--Gaylord Nelson--pushed for an environmental teach-in to be held on April 22, 1970.

First Earth Day 1970
On that day, the influence of the earth and nature had particular significance; millions across the United States participated in the celebration of our blue planet and the collective concern for its conversation and preservation.  Years later, this day was brought to international attention, and now over 190 countries celebrate and recognize the beauty of our shared Earth.

Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.  Now, the United States boasts some of the strongest environmental standards in the world--especially here in California.

And here in California, Sun Valley has been doing its part to nourish and give back to the planet.  This is especially important since our products (aka beautiful flowers) come straight from the Earth's rich heart.  To demonstrate our care and respect for the land we use, we seek to utilize sustainable farming practices.  To minimize unnecessary waste, we use an environmentally friendly steam-sterilization technique to recycle our soil, while also employing the practices of crop rotation, integrated waste/compost management, and energy-efficient greenhouses.  We use bicycles to get from hoop house to greenhouse to field to office, which is friendly for the land and for our bodies.

We were the first flower farm in California to be certified by Veriflora, an agricultural sustainability and eco-labeling program which ensures that we meet America's most comprehensive sustainability standard.  In short, we try to live symbiotically with the planet that, in turn, gives us our gorgeous lilies, tulips, and irises.

Earth Day Iris 2015

And what better way to celebrate the iconic beauty of the Earth than with a flower?  Here at Sun Valley, we are commemorating Earth Day with our Iris.  It is a refreshing and pure symbol of what clean air, land, and water can achieve—a blue flower from, and for, a blue planet.
