Happy Birthday Dad

I went to see my Dad yesterday.  His 88th birthday is Sunday and with dicey winter weather in the forecast for later in the week, yesterday was the day to take his gift.  Dad is in good health both mentally and physically.  He was proud to have passed his annual driver's test. He lives in town, but his mobility is important to him because he goes to see Mom in the nursing home almost every day and then drives out to the farm to putter about.  Dad has always been a fan of 2 cylinder John Deere's.  Grandpa bought  a Model AR in 1941 and that tractor is still on the farm.  The one below is a Model A that was built in 1937 or 38.  It was given to him with a broken pedestal.  He welded and braced the pedestal and at some point a year or 2 later we put in new rings and painted it.  The loader was built by a neighbor.  The tractor still runs and it starts by cranking the flywheel.  Dad is still better than anyone at starting it.

Saving on Machinery Costs

One of the things I like to do in my blog is show things that you do not see every day.  I recently ran out of gas in my 4 wheeler and had to go to Morrisonville to get gas.  I was truly amazed to spot the New Idea corn picker about 2 miles south of Morrisonville.  This would have been state of the art corn harvesting about 1960. I guess the producer is saving equipment costs.  Just in case you are in doubt, on the way back to the field, I caught the same machinery actually working in the field.

Seed Cleaner

The boat oars are not part of the seed cleaner below.  We spotted it at the Litchfield Picker's market today.  I am not sure it is functional.  Seed was shaken across screens and past  a fan to remove weeds and chaff so that seed would plant evenly.  We spent many after school evenings cleaning wheat, clover seed, and soybeans for planting the next year.  With patented genetics, we don't see much of this any more.

Old Allis Chalmers Combine

I drove past this old Allis Chalmers combine for sale 8 times this week.  I understand that these combines are great for harvesting prairie grass seed and clover seed.  It needs a new canvas and some belts for sure, but does not look too bad.  it is located at Illinois 255 and Fosterburg Road.

Old Wagon

I spotted the wooden wheeled wagon near Bulpit.  We were in Taylorville doing a septic tank investigation.  The view facing the road looks like it has a wagon box on it, but the view below reveals it is a grain box from an old gran drill.

Rock Island Tractor

The Rock Island Tractor below is parked in front of Buchheit in Jacksonville.  It seems to be in good shape for an unrestored tractor.

John Deere Mounted Corn Picker

There is a John Deere 227 corn picker parked along I-55 north  of Wagonner. I found a web site that said it was built from 1953 till 1963. It is mounted on a John Deere G built from 1937 till 1953.  I am guessing by the grill that this one was made after 1942.  My Dad had a 227 picker mounted to a John Deere 60.  He would fill the wagons in the morning and my brother and I unloaded when we got home from school.  They were something of  a fire hazard because residue would get trapped on the engine and catch fire. Dad had a neighbor put it out for him one time and put it out several times himself.  He finally started buying disposable fire extinguishers and kept three on the tractor at a time.  The picker worked well and I think Dad replaced all the parts at least twice before he quit picking ear corn.

Old Auger Tractor

It is not unusual to see an old tractor on the auger, but I think this might be the oldest I have seen on an auger in some time.  Not sure what model or year of this Case tractor. My Dad recognized the tractor as a Case D. it was built between 1939 and 1953.
