Ideal Growing Conditions for Onion in India

Can be cultivated in wide range of soils from Sandy loam to Clay loam

Optimum pH level
6.5 to 7.5

Temperature
13-14ºC during vegetative period, 16-21ºC during bulbing stage, 30-35ºC during maturity and harvest

Growing seasons
May – September (Kharif), August – February (Late Kharif) , October-April (Rabi)

Nursery Raising
Raised beds of 1.2 m width and 3-4 m length

Transplanting
After sowing 45 – 60 days

Irrigation
Necessary at the time of transplanting and light irrigation should be done on the third day after planting and subsequent irrigation will be done at 7- 10 days interval.  Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation can be effective.

Apply 50% Nitrogen as basal dose and remaining 50% to be applied in 7 splits through drip

Soya bean in Kharif season  followed by Onion in Rabi season is the best crop rotation

Harvesting
Depends on various factors such as cultivar, planting season, market price and condition of the crop. Onions should be harvested at 50% neck fall stage

Mulching your onions is an excellent way to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds
