Hydroponics Farming Technology - Advantages and Benefits

Hydroponics is the modern technology farming in which plant growth and productivity is controlled by water and its nutrients level.  “Hydroponics” is the term related to water and the farming is done without soil and growing the crops only on water.

In Hydroponics farming, water is enriched with rich nutrients and specific pH levels are maintained which are essential for plant growth and better yield. In this method, plants take the nutrients from the water and using sunlight, they produce the output.

Following are the basic functions of soil which have to provided in water based farming in the absence of the soil

Plant Root System Support- Generally, in Hydroponics system, a medium like sand or gravel or plastics are used for supporting the plant root system

Supply of Water- Water is directly supplied to the plants, whereas in soil based farming plants get water from the soils to establish root system in the soil

Supply of Nutrients- In soil based farming, nutrients are supplied from organic content whereas in Hydroponics farming fertilizers are added to the water to provide balance and nutrition to the plants

Supply of Oxygen- In Hydroponic farming plants get oxygen from water whereas in soil farming plants get oxygen from soil

Advantages and Benefits of Hydroponics Farming

Ø  Hydroponics system can be automated and managed easily
Ø  Hydroponics system requires less water
Ø  Unlike traditional farming methods, Hydroponics farming required less space
Ø  Product quality will be high in Hydroponics farming
Ø  This technology can be combined with Greenhouse technology for better results
Ø  Hydroponics farming uses all the mineral nutrients provided in the water without any wastage and provides less pollution farming
Ø  Faster growth and better yield can be expected in this system as we are controlling water  pH level and providing essential nutrients in optimized way

The only disadvantage is the initial set-up cost and this is not organic farming.  We use fertilizers in the water for plant growth.
