Dubium, The Brightest Star Flower

A Mediterranean flower is taking the floral world by storm--the beautiful and voluminous Ornithogalum dubium.

This gorgeous flower features a cluster of star-shaped florets gathered at the head of a long, leafless stem. There are over 150 species of this "Wonder Flower," and here at Sun Valley, we grow the largest and brightest--O. Dubium (we refer to ours simply as dubium).

Our original stock came from the flowers' native home of Israel.  In 2011, Lane DeVries made a special trip there to find the best-of-the-best Ornithogalum species.  What he came back with was the long-stemmed dubium that we now offer you, in gorgeous colors like saturated orange, creamy butter-yellow, and pure white.

Growing Practices

Because of their Mediterranean origin, these flowering plants are accustomed to warm weather with minimal rain, so we do our best to give them what they want. We begin by planting bulbs in our Southern Californian hoop houses in early fall.

We give the developing sprouts plenty of light and wrap the hoop houses to keep them warm.  Once the plants begin to form their heads, we cool their environment while still providing plenty of light. The key here is to find the perfect balance between light and dark and warm and cool.  The balance and timing of these elements will help the blooms cluster beautifully at the top, instead of stretching along the length of its long stems.

Speaking of their long, leafless stems...our dubium has some of the longest stems in the flower market, measuring at 40 cm plus!  However, their stem length doesn't happen just by chance; we have to remain vigilant in our growing practices so that they can grow strong, thick stems without becoming tangled.

Typically, we pick dubium from March until May; starting with the orange and cream, and ending with the white.

Dubium Design

There are more than a few reasons why dubium is sought after in floral design.  First, its long-lasting flowers and robust stems give it an incredible vase life.  Second, its silky florets bloom in stages all the way to the top of its flower head (a process which can take a few weeks), which means the flower looks fantastic for at least a month.  It’s lovely to watch its head of buds turn into a showy mass of flowers.  One of our sales managers even compared the fully bloomed head of white dubium to a Peegee Hydrangea, and if you look at the photo below you can see why!

Last but not least, no matter what stage of bloom it is in, dubium adds texture, emphasis, and a focal punch to bouquets and arrangements.  Designers love working with its long stems, which have a natural movement and curve.

Viburnum Spring Snowballs

In the Sun Valley Flower World, it ain't spring until we have Viburnum.  And ladies and gentlemen, do we have Viburnum!

spring viburnum snowballs

Viburnum is extra special because its growing season is one of the shortest--we start picking at the end of March (when their many-flowered heads are nice and full) and we are usually done by the end of April  You may hear Viburnum blooms also referred to as Snowballs--this is because their mass of tiny blossoms give each bloom-head a spherical, puffy shape.

Viburnum is also known for its color change during the season (which we'll talk about below).  They first bloom in a vivid lime green color and then turn to ivory-white puffballs as they mature in the sunshine.

Early-Season and Late-Season Viburnum

Willow Creek Canyon

We grow Viburnum at our inland farm (a mountain canyon better known as Willow Creek) whose micro-climate provides the perfect conditions to produce this fantastic spring show.

We plant viburnum in both open fields and covered hoop houses--the hoop houses hold in heat, contributing to a faster growing rate.  This simple trick allows us to extend the normally super-short viburnum growing season.  We can stagger our picking schedule, starting with early-season hoop houses and ending with their open field-grown counterparts.

Here is the progression of growth over 6 weeks from dormant stems to super green foliage and blooms

 Viburnum Green-to-White

Viburnum is famous for its color change from green-to-white, which signifies the progression of the season. For example, right now, the crop is a charming green color.  This fresh look is known as early-season viburnum; it looks stunning on its own (a veritable spring forest with long stems and full, lime-green heads), and also works wonders as a focal piece in spring bouquets, adding color and a field-to-vase aesthetic to any home or bridal arrangement.

Late-season viburnum is another visual treat.  As our crops mature and the open-fields get a few weeks of full sunshine, our young, green viburnum develops into a brilliant white.  We still pick while it's mostly green, just like we do with our iris, tulips, and lilies.  This guarantees a longer vase life and you can watch it color up beautifully.

White snowball viburnum has an exquisite and classical appearance--its long stems and multiple florets still brings the wildflower aesthetic to arrangements like early-season green viburnum, but it also boasts an elegant cleanliness that can only be achieved with white.

Regardless of whether you opt for early-season green or late-season white, this heady bloom and its wonderfully long, wooden stems makes it the perfect floral complement for wedding bouquets, Mother's day arrangements, or any quintessential spring gathering.  But you better hurry, like spring, viburnum season passes in a beautiful flash.

Our Dahlia test crop looks amazing!
I don't get down to our farm in Oxnard, California nearly enough, but last week I made the trip down to Ventura County to see what's in the ground right now.

Here are a few pics featuring the flowers that caught my eye.

Cotinus Among Us!

“Gardens and flowers have a way of bringing people together, drawing them from their homes.”
- Clare Ansberry, The Women of Troy Hill: The Back-Fence Virtues of Faith and Friendship

Feel that subtle nip in the evening air? Like it or not, fall is just around the corner. Luckily autumn is perhaps the best season to get creative in floral design. The fall design palette is all about contrast and texture, Sun Valley is known for our lilies, iris and tulips, but we have an eccentric, funky and arty side of our offerings as well.

This cotinus reaches 10 feet tall!
Did you know we have a wild variety of branches, pods, berries and greens? These non-conventional design elements add an eccentric touch to any arrangement, which will leave even experienced floral pros asking, “What is that?”

Growing Cotinus
Sunlight brings out the rich burgundy of the cotinus.
Cotinus is one of these hip, modish crops.  It is a dark branch, offering leaves which are maroon on the top and dark greenish on the bottom.  There are highlights of purple, burgundy and scarlet running through the leaves giving this subdued design element some serious visual interest.
Cotinus grown by The Sun Valley Floral Farm

Cotinus’ common name is “smoke bush” or “smoke tree,” which is derived from the wispy clusters of flowers that appear as puffs of smoke around the plant.  We harvest before the plant flowers, so don’t expect any puffs of smoke from us.  Cotinus grows at our farm in Willow Creek, California; this farm is up in the hills of Humboldt County right on the banks of the Trinity River.  This is an ideal spot to grow this crop, since it loves the sun.  It grows in tall rows, and really stretches to the sky.  These branches will shoot up to 10 feet tall in a single season.

Gardeners have used cotinus extensively for years; it is a great boarder and can even act as a living fence in your garden.  The tree has been bred to grow in different shape and sizes; however the tall, straight "Royal Purple" variety we grow is my favorite.

In the design studio cotinus is very versatile, it can act as a dark back ground element, or stand out as a tall, eye catching focal.  To this end, Sun Valley offers custom cuts, how many other floral products can you get a 6 foot custom cut?  This probably the only one.

Have a look at our Cotinus Resource Page, and why not order few boxes of this unique foliage?
