PMA Picture Book

Hey there Flower Friends,  we just returned from Orlando, Florida where we attended the Produce Marketing Association's annual trade show, "Fresh Summit." This is one of the most fun, diverse, and colorful trade shows of the year--over 20,000 attendees come to check out booths by flower farmers, produce farmers, shippers, suppliers, buyers, and everyone in between--yes, it all comes together at PMA's Fresh Summit.

We covered our booth in rustic wooden signs, lights, and thousands of American-grown flowers--our own World of Color set to wow the crowd.  Our booth was styled after a Farmer's Market with three distinct themes:
  •  4th Generation Flower Farmers: Lane comes from four generations of tulip farmers, and this honors that tradition with Tulips, Iris and Lilies.

  • Sun Valley Flower Patch: Our Flower Patch featured a huge collection of flowers and botanicals, such as matsumoto asters, delphinium, cotinus, and ilex.  We pick our farm-fresh products regularly and have an amazing selection of flowers available every day of the week.

  •  WildFlower Bouquets: Our wildflower bouquets our created at our Oxnard farm.  At PMA, we featured seasonal bouquets with a range of price points and recipes, and all consistently styled in a way that consumers love. This display in particular had people oohing and ahhing all day!
But enough talk! Let's take a look through our 2016 PMA Picture Book:

This trade show was full of ideas, education, and resources about the future of the floral landscape, but what we really loved was the joining of experts, leaders and decision makers from every link of the fresh supply chain. Trade shows like this give all of us  the opportunity  learn from each other and be inspired by what we all bring to the table.  We hope you enjoyed this Fresh Summit Picture Book as much as we enjoyed being there!

Join Petal It Foward 2016!

The Society of American Florists (SAF) is having their annual feel-good floral event, Petal It Forward, next week. The goal? To spread happiness, two bouquets at a time.

Petal it Forward
Petal It Forward in New York

On Wednesday, October 19th, SAF and florists nationwide will randomly present two bouquets each to people on the street in more than 200 cities in 47 states (see map of participating cities here). They flower-givers will ask recipients to "Petal It Forward" by giving away one of their bouquets to whomever they choose, and posting picture about it on social media using the hashtag #PetalItForward.

From 2015's PetalItForward Event
SAF is encouraging florists, wholesalers and growers of all sizes to join in, with the goal of Petal It Forward events happening on the same day across the country, spreading smiles and highlighting the fact that giving and receiving flowers make us feel good. This kind of activity is good for business and the community on several levels. SAF Vice President of Marketing Jennifer Sparks explains,
"The campaign's key strategy is to generate traditional and social media coverage to highlight the benefit of flower power--the positive impact flowers have on our emotional well-being."

What Sparks is referencing is a study completed by Rutgers University which demonstrates that the presence of flowers creates "instant delight," enhances feelings of life satisfaction and happiness, and has a positive impact on social behavior.  In addition, surveys conducted by SAF last year revealed that 84% of Americans say the best reason for receiving flowers is "just because," and 88% agreed that "giving flowers to others makes me feel happy."  Petal it Forward gives consumers the opportunity to both give and receive.

Petal it Forward Jennifer Sparks quote

How It Works

Join the floral industry on October 19th in surprising strangers with flowers.  Stand outside your shop or hit the streets to give two flower bouquets to random people in your community.  Kindly ask your flower recipients to "Petal It Forward," by giving one of their bouquets to someone special in their life, or even to another stranger.  The reason? Just Because.

Women's Day Celebration

Women's Day is not a "new" holiday by any means, but it sure does feel like it.  The earliest Women’s Day observance was held on February 28, 1909, in New York, and the earliest I ever heard of Women's Day was March 8th, two years ago.  As a wee lass, I never saw Women's Day on the calendar, but I'm starting to now.  Why is that? I assume it's because women have made notable advancements (especially in the last two decades) that demand recognition, honor, respect, and celebration.
Women's Day 2016

When the first Women's Day took place in 1909, women had very few, if any, rights.  They couldn't vote, own property, choose a career, sue or be sued.  At this time they weren't even considered persons under the 14th Constitutional Amendment, which guarantees equal protection under the law.

But we've come a long way since 1909.  In the US, we exercise those hard-won rights with vigor.  For example, a record number of women (104) will be serving in the US Congress this year (yes, that is only 19% of Congress, but that is twice the amount from 20 years ago).  There is even a serious female contender--nay, front runner--in the presidential bid.  Also, twenty years ago there were zero female CEOs on the Fortune 500 list.  Now, women occupy 5% of those positions.  Change may have started slowly, but it is catching fire.

womens day quotes

The point? Honor a woman this day.  Whatever her position--CEO, administrative assistant, small business owner, full-time mother, manager, laborer, engineer, artist, customer service extraordinaire--honor her.  Her current social, cultural, and professional position was built upon centuries of revolutionary history, the ripples of which are still in effect.

We say, start with flowers. Flowers are pretty, but they are not weak.  They, too, have used all their resources--their genetics, their will, their immediate environment, the sun, dirt, and rain--to fight against the elements and rise up, beautiful, fragrant and strong. Men, honor the women in your life with vibrant, living blooms.  Women, celebrate the fellow females in your life with flowers--your mother, sister, boss, co-worker--any woman that has inspired or encouraged you in that special way that only women can.   Go further and buy flowers for yourself--love and respect yourself, and recognize from where you have come.
womens day march 8th

Women's Day is a day for reflection and celebration.  Reflection on how far we have come, and a celebration of the hope we have for the future. Enjoy it!

Pantone Color of the Year 2016

Pantone wants us all to calm down in 2016.  For the first time in history the color institute, Pantone, has chosen the blending of two hues for Color of the Year 2016--Rose Quartz and Serenity (Pantone 13-1520 and 15-3919, respectively).

Rose Quartz and Serenity Pantone 2016

Rose Quartz and Serenity

Much different than 2015's full-bodied and complex Marsala, the blending of Rose Quartz and Serenity offers a softer take on color, fashion, and art for 2016.

This blending is a mindful and symbolic act; it is to be seen as an antidote to modern-day stresses and as a visual participant in the social and cultural transformations happening around us.  According to Pantone's Executive Director, Leatrice Eisman, the blending of Rose Quartz and Serenity seek to "challenge traditional perceptions of color association," while simultaneously demonstrating "an inherent balance" between warm and cool tones.

The Rose Quartz and Serenity combination mixes well with similar mid-tones such as muted purples and greens, soft blues and grays, rich browns, and most shades of yellow and pink. Check out the palette samples below.

Flower Pairings

Rose Quartz and Serenity will make the creation of fashionable flower arrangements easy-to-achieve this year, even for the novice designer.  After all, a complementary color is built right in! For those who have more experience in color theory and design, you will enjoy creating seemingly limitless color-of-the-year palettes for your work.

Serenity Light blue delphinium hyacinth hydrangea
L-R: Serenity-hued Delphinium, Hyacinth, and Hydrangea
For example, you could pair light blue delphinium, hyacinth, hydrangea, and iris with Rose Quartz vases, table-runners, or bridesmaid's dresses.  Or, use the light pink and peach hues of our lilies to pair with any Serenity-hued background.

Pink snapdragons and celosia will make excellent accent pieces, and wine-hued flowers (such as dahlias) will add dramatic contrast and focal points to any Rose Quartz and Serenity arrangement.

Another complementary color includes all shades yellow--look to use yellow and white matricaria, soft yellow ornithogalum, and, of course, the many warm hues of our tulips.

Looking forward to the summer season,  I cannot wait to see what designers start doing with hydrangea and even later, antique hydrangea--both hydrangeas' fresh and antique tones are the perfect accompaniment to the Pantone palette.
